Be Part of the Solution :: Social :: Environment :: Economy :: The East End’s Energy Future
East End Climate Action Network (eeCAN) will host a full-day launch event on August 16, 2014 to build awareness about sustainability, renewable energy and climate change resiliency. Activities will include environment-themed games for kids, small “teach-in” circles with sustainability experts, a showcase of local and national green businesses and earth-inspired artwork. Food, drink, live music, and theatrical performances will be available throughout the day. There will be opportunities for folks to get more involved in local sustainability and climate change efforts, including solar energy consultations, beach clean-ups and membership sign-up for locally-acting environmental groups.
Why 100 Percent Renewable?
Communities powered by renewable energy have taken control of their energy destiny. They are no longer at the whim of spikes in traditional energy costs; they are no longer addicted to oil, coal and natural gas, which rely on dangerous extraction practices such as fracking and mountain-top removal; and they keep millions of dollars in their local economies every year instead of shipping that money out to multinational corporations in exchange for dirty fossil fuels.
This Month, East Hampton Town Board adopted the goal of meeting 100 percent of the town's electricity needs with renewable energy by 2020, and pledged to generate enough renewable energy to offset all remaining energy needs - heating and transportation - with renewable energy by 2030.
With the help of Renewable Energy Long Island and YOU, the Town of East Hampton and hopefully all of the Southfork, will fulfill this imminent goal!

What is Sustainability?
We hear the words 'sustainable' and 'sustainability' almost every day. But what does it mean exactly? Is it about people and culture, our environment, or jobs and money? Is it about cities or the country? Is it about you and me or is it something for other people to worry about?
Sustainability is about all of these things and more.
Sustainability could be defined as an ability or capacity of something to be maintained or to sustain itself. It’s about taking what we need to live now, without jeopardising the potential for people in the future to meet their needs.
If an activity is said to be sustainable, it should be able to continue forever. Read more...
